Tonight, Ilana Wexler takes the stage inside the Fleet Center, and after
talking with her today I'm not sure she plans to give it back.
Ilana Wexler: "My name is Ilana Wexler. I'm 12 years old and I'm the
founder of Kids for Kerry."
Ilana Wexler sits in the room where her mother grew up, practicing the speech
she will give tonight to millions watching the convention.
She was invited to give the speech by Teresa Heinz-Kerry who saw her work as
a Kerry volunteer.
We first saw Ilana at the Kerry San Francisco headquarters back in February.
It was clear then she was a natural. After that, it's been one news interview
after the next, culminating in tonight's spotlight. Pretty heady stuff for a
12-year-old.
Ilana: "Last night on my way home police officers knew who I was."
Ilana likes getting noticed. She tells me she's thinking about a career in
politics.
Ilana: "Maybe mayor or senator or governor, but maybe a senator because
a mayor seems a little bit too low for me."
Remember, she's 12 years old. She'll probably grow out of that kind of
honesty. As we walk down the Boston suburb street where her mother grew up, Ms.
Wexler tells me the most exciting thing about tonight will be getting her
credentials.
Ilana: "I'm going to get one that's green or purple that says
podium."
What will it be like after the election when she goes back to being Ilana
Wexler, seventh grader? She plans to be the only seventh grader in her class
with an invite to the White House.
